    Dell has published its latest corporate responsibility report today. While I know you may be interested in what the company is doing from an operations standpoint to improve its stance toward the environment, what you really care about from a green-tech perspective is how the company is redesigning its products. So here are some of its latest achievements, as well as what you can expect in the months/years to come.

    So far …

    • All current laptop displays now use LEDs, which eliminates mercury.
    • More than 7.2 million pounds of the plastics in Dell’s OptiPlex systems and monitors came from post-consumer recycled plastics. (That translates into roughly 263 million water bottles.
    • In fiscal year 2010, Dell has more than 135 products listed in the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) database.

    What you can expect …

    • An effort to make laptop and desktop products up to 25 percent more energy-efficient by the end of 2010, compared with 2008
    • A focus on the ability of server-managed power management to cut up to 40,000 in carbon dioxide emissions for Dell customers between fiscal year 2009 and fiscal year 2012
    • A re-energized initiative to cut brominated flame retardants (BFRs), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics and chlorinated flame retardants from all new Dell personal computing products by 2011. That’s a reset goal, and the company is leaving itself room for error. The report states: “Achieving this goal is contingent on when the industry identifies acceptable alternatives that will lower product health and environmental impacts without compromising product performance.”
    • The proactive phaseout of materials that will be targeted in the next update of the restriction on hazardous substances (RoHS): hexabromocyclododecane, bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate.

    The Pew Research Center found that in 2009 74% of adults regularly used the Internet, as do even more teenagers. And Internet users weren't just on personal computers -- they were hooked up at home, at work, at school. That makes for a lot of computers, and a lot of energy use.

    For instance, a Dell 19-inch flat panel monitor uses over 34 watts per hour -- and that's not including the energy consumption of the actual computer, just the screen. (That means every year the carbon emissions from the monitor alone will cost $10 and are almost the same as driving 850 miles, according to a handy Dell calculator.) With a typical Dell computer using 112 watts, you're looking at a lot of energy used by one machine. Now picture a computer lab or office with 30 individual computers and monitors running at once (you can do the math yourself).

    Unfortunately for the planet, it's hard to get by today without using computers. But by following our simple tips you can scale your computer's energy consumption way back, saving on energy and cost.

    Customize your power settings
    Most new computers have energy-saving sleep modes that turn off the computer monitor and leave the rest of the system running. Set your computer to sleep mode if you'll be away from it for more than five minutes, or customize your power settings to automatically put your computer in sleep mode after five minutes of inactivity.

    Shut it down at night
    Every time you're away from your computer for more than two hours, turn it off. Computers still use a little bit of energy when they're plugged in, so unplug them from the power source to make sure they aren't contributing to the phantom load. By shutting down and unplugging your computer when it's not in use, you'll save energy, and $90 a year! Don't worry -- frequently turning off your computer will not shorten its life.

    Don't use a screensaver
    Having a unicorn prance across your monitor every three seconds might make you the coolest guy in the office, but it is not saving any energy. Put your monitor in sleep mode instead of using a screen saver when you're away for a short period of time.

    If you're buying new, go for a laptop
    Laptops are smaller and designed to be more energy efficient as a means to extend battery life, so they use less energy than desktop computers. National Geographic found that laptops use up to 50% less energy than desktop computers. To be sure you're purchasing a truly sustainable computer, make sure it is either Energy Star rated or has received a gold rating from the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool.

When wanting to make your laptop go solar, make sure that it is compatible and have it professionally checked out. Make sure there are safety kits and that the devices are compatible. Do not risk doing things your own, as an accident could result in a complete blackout of your laptop.

    It doesn’t have to be Earth Day for me to think about how I can make an impact (or less of an impact) on our planet. Here are a few of my favorite tips:

    1. Lower your thermostat. Buy a programmable thermostat.

    2. Reuse your water bottle. Avoid buying bottled water. In fact, reuse everything at least once, especially plastics.

    3. Check out your bathroom. Use low-flow faucets, showerheads, and toilets.

    4. Start a compost in your back yard or on your rooftop.

    5. Buy foods locally. Check out Eat Local Challenge and FoodRoutes to get started. Buy locally made products and locally produced services.

    6. Buy in season.

    7. Buy compact fluorescent light bulbs. You'll find more on energy-efficient products and practices at Energy Star.

    8. Turn off lights and electronics when you leave the room. Unplug your cell phone charger from the wall when not using it. Turn off energy strips and surge protectors when not in use (especially overnight).

    9. Recycle your newspapers.

    10. Car pool. Connect with other commuters at eRideShare.

    11. Consider a car sharing service like Zipcar.

    12. Ride a bike.

    13. Walk, jog, or run.

    14. Go to your local library instead of buying new books.

    A recent report reveals that of all the states with takeback programs for used computers, Texas ranks last.

    The Lone Star State’s takeback law mandates that all computer manufacturers and businesses must provide their customers with free recycling options. All discarded electronics, from desktops to monitors, fall within this category.

    Released by the Texas Campaign for the Environment, the report generated per capita rates for all states that host computer takeback programs. This is the first report released since the program was introduced in 2008.

    While computer manufacturers were able to recover approximately 15 million pounds of used electronics in Texas, this amounts to only a half-pound collected per person.

    Minnesota, on the other hand, was able to collect nearly 3 pounds of discarded electronics per person during the first year of its takeback program. The policies there are comparatively more rigorous, since businesses are charged with a fine if they fail to collect a certain percentage of what is sold.

    Executive director of the Texas Campaign for the Environment Robert Schneider said in a statement, “The Texas TakeBack program is a phenomenal idea poorly executed. Of all the computer makers, only Dell took ‘free and convenient recycling’ to heart when they designed their recycling program.”

    In fact, out of the 15 million pounds recovered in Texas, the Austin-based Dell, Inc. was responsible for no less than 13 million, an amount made possible through the corporation’s partnerships with Goodwill and Staples.

    While Dell is largely responsible for electronics recycling in Texas, other manufacturers are attempting to make proper computer disposal as easy as possible by offering convenient mail-back programs, considered the default option in the Texas program.

    Even the Texas Campaign for the Environment admitted Dell’s massive statewide role in the first year of the takeback program. The report stated, “By any measure, the first year of the Texas TakeBack program would have proven a complete failure without the disproportionate share of the recovery and recycling load borne by Dell Computers.”

    The less-than-stellar results of the report will hopefully be the incentive the state needs to do better in the future. Schneider added, “We want the program to be effective, not just on paper.”

    Question:"My inspiron 500m battery will not charge. My dell AC Adapter is fine and powering the laptop, but the battery, that IS connected (I have taken it out and put it back in) has remained at 0% for the last few days. I recently posted this complaint in another thread, but after reading so many similar complaints, I realized I should make my own. I now understand the warranty for a battery is 1 year, but I have a few very frustrating issues with this:

    First, I purchased the 3 year extended warranty assuming all parts would be included- this is, to me, common sense regardless of whether the battery is considered a consumable product or not.

    Second, I have had this laptop for only 13 and half months! This feels terrible- a product which I have had a 1 year warranty for (which I assumed was 3 years) has died a month and a half after it would have been freely replaced. I am a poor college student, and this laptop was expensive enough when I bought it!

    And last, I have rarely used this 600m battery! I have taken it on only 4-5 car trips, and I can not even recall the last time (minus right now) the battery went to 0%, as I ALWAYS have it plugged in; in fact, I would surmise that if I were to use my battery as much as the average user (certainly more than me) then this latitude d600 battery probably would have died long ago when it was actually under its separate and special warranty! Should I be penalized for rarely using what appears to be a bad product? After all, minus the aforementioned car rides, the only time I've really used the d505 battery is when the charger has accidentally been unplugged! As I responded in the other thread, if a product is going to be considered consumable, perhaps it should do its job more than a handful of times before malfunctioning!

    I do hope this is a different problem altogether and not my battery, and if so, I apologize, but, after reading many similar situations, the only problem here seems to be with the laptop battery, and this is very frustrating!

    6. Try flashing the BIOS once if possible, because I recall a bug in one of the older inspiron notebooks in which the adapter was recognized after the BIOS was flashed, but they would have most probably got it fixed by now.

    If all of the above steps dont fix the problem, the Adapter has probably gone bad, Contact Dell Tech Support.

If you use a non-Dell one, it will state that it cannot determine the power adaptor type and then let you know that the laptop will run slowly and will not carge your latitude d630 battery . Another way to make sure you behave and buy only Dell spares. Incidentally, with the adaptor it knows if it's a Dell one because Dell use the centre pin of the adaptor jack connector to send a 2.5V ID signal to the laptop. The positive and negative of the 19V supply is on the inside and outside of the metal barrel of the jack plug. Internal pin is solely for ID signal.

    I'm afraid the only recourse is to purchase a Dell adaptor if you wish for the latitude d820 battery , latitud d830 battery to charge. I'd recommend a second-hand one from eBay. Try to buy the highest wattage one you can."

    Here's a nice rant for you: One of my two Laptop batteries for my inspiron 1525 battery died a couple of weeks back in the middle of a business trip. Since I have two of them this wasn't a huge issue, but still this is a major bummer especially since the batteries both are barely over a year old and have not been used very much at all. In fact I was using the battery a few days before it started 'acting' up and it has been holding a charge well.

    Here's what happens: The battery is not really dead, but it looks to me like some electronics inside of the battery are preventing the inspiron 1525 battery from charging. When I click on the battery indicator I get a funky blinking light and when inserted into the computer the the charge light just blinks orange instead of the regular green charging indicator. Did I mention the inspiron e1405 battery was working just fine a few days earlier with a charge hold well over 3 hours of work time.

    This seems like such a rip off if you ask me. I started calling tech support to see if I could get a warranty on the inspiron 1526 battery. Of course the warranty had expired exacly two weeks ago, and there was no budging the Dell support guy. FWIW, Dell doesn't warranty batteries that are older than a year even if you have an extended warranty for the rest of the system.

    Next I went to the Web Site to see what a new inspiron 1526 battery would cost and sure enough there's some language that says it's rated for 300 charge/discharges. Now I would really be curious how this is measured. I'm pretty sure this battery isn't actually dead, but something has been quietly counting roughly how the batteries been charged and decided - dup, that's enough for you buddy. So now I can't even use that battery as a hold over battery while the system is plugged in (I like to use the battery as a UPS since we loose power on a regular basis here on Maui).

    The worst part about this is that I rarely use the inspiron e1705 battery anyway. Sure when I travel I use the laptop on the plain or around a client's office, but for the most part the machine is plugged in and under power. But even when it is - according to Dell the battery is discharged/recharged. If there's electronics in the damn inspiron e1705 battery shouldn't it be smart enough to figure out that while it's under power it should not engage the inspiron e1405 battery in any way at all?

    It really eats at me that we get reamed by so many companies any way they can get you. Always stick it to you in the details. There are a couple of other things that happened today that go along with that but I'll leave that for yet another rant ...

That's what industrial design students at of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are envisioning with an 'algae bioreactor' called the Bio-Grow - a device which can cultivate high outputs of algae intended for biofuel production - all built from old computer parts.

    "If someone had one of these in their homes, they would cultivate algae and extract it," says Megan Kenney, one of the members of the five-person undergraduate team. "Then they could take it into a gas company that was set up with an oil filtration facility and get credit off their gas."

    The Bio-Grow's various components would include side panels from an Apple G4 CPU tower for the incubating tank, with PVC pipes for structural reinforcement and high density foam for insulation and stability. An old Apple iMac CRT provides the light needed for photosynthesis, while a modified Dell Latitude CPX laptop controls and adjusts the temperature and required light spectrums generated by the iMac CRT. The device also features a water pump to aerate the algae and a faucet that allows user to harvest the algae at any time.

    "Algae's best growth factors are within the red and blue spectrums of light at a ratio of four to one," Kenney explains. "We also knew that it needed to be 62 to 82 degrees."

    Bringing algae biofuels into large-scale production
    Currently, though it requires less land to grow, algae biofuel production is still a less-than-perfect, costly and complex process confined mostly to the private sector.

    The team hopes that the Bio-Grow will be part of a larger system that will allow your average algae-grower to take their homegrown algae to a biomass collection point. The algae would be then transported to a refinery, which would extract the lipids from the algae to create biodiesel, while its byproducts could be used for livestock feed, fertilizer and even pharmaceuticals.

    According to the team's estimates, the algae from Bio-Grow devices installed in only 6.5 percent of American homes would be sufficient enough to replace petroleum with algae biodiesel. Growers could also make a quick buck: over the long-term, fast-growing algae can fetch a profit of a dollar per gallon because it can be harvested every three days. Though it's questionable how energy-efficient old computer components can be, conceptual prototypes like the Bio-Grow could help to bring biofuels mainstream.
